Wine Tasting from Riedel glasses at Home
Once you have a selection of different glasses for different wines – instead of following the guidelines – try the same wine from different shape glasses.
Firstly use 2 or 3 non Riedel glasses. For example use a cut glass chalice from a noted glass manufacturer, use a cheap glass perhaps from the supermarket and even an ISO standard tasting glass. Line these up with 3 or 4 Riedel glasses of differing shapes. 6-7 glasses in total.
Pour a small amount of wine of equal volume into each glass. Ensure that the temperature of the wine is not too warm as above 20 degress – the alcohol is emphasised and the taste will be ‘sharper’.
Firstly swirl and sniff the wine (don’t taste) in each glass working from left to right starting with the non-Riedel glasses.
Then, sniff and taste each glass in order working toward the appropriate glass for the wine style.
You will be amazed at the difference.
You can do this with any Riedel or non Riedel glasses to see the difference that any glass makes to the taste of your wine.
